To Vegan or Not to Vegan? New tests available for your highest nutrition!

I've been vegan a few times in my life. I'm talking hard-core, no breaking-the-"rules" vegan. I loved it, but then inevitably, I would start not feeling too hot and I had to go back to adding some kind of protein in (for me it's eggs and occasional fish, a la sushi).   Well I was super stoked to learn about HealthLabs new tests that can help you decide if going vegan is the right thing for you - and to make sure you have all the right nutrients for eating this way too.   You can also test to see if you have any allergies to meat and dairy to support [...]

Grain-free, Sugar-free Chocolate Cranberry Cookies

These grain-free cookies are my new faves - I'm making them every Sunday for the week ahead. This Sunday my husband ever so coyly said to me, "Um honey, could you double the batch? They aren't lasting long enough." He's right, they aren't - so you've been warned - you'll probably want to double this recipe from the jump. Be sure to combine the butter and almond butter in the saucepan as described - it's what gives these cookies the creamiest texture. Enjoy! Xo Ingredients: 1 1/4 cup almond flour 1/4 c organic coconut flour 1/8 c arrowroot flour 1 t baking soda 1 t sea salt 1 c grass-fed butter/coconut [...]

Alkaline Water: Get Your 3L in each day

Did you know that your body is made up of almost 90% water? (It's true although "scientists" argue and say it's anywhere from 70-90%). What you need to know is that you are mostly water! Which means to feed your body in a nourishing and healthy way, you need to be replenishing it with water - high-vibrating water. When you do so, and drink healthy, alkaline water, your body thrives. It can self-heal at a higher capacity and your systems of digestion and elimination are regular and healthy. The "problem" is most water is highly acidic which means it only continues to contribute to inflammation in the body which is the [...]

Gluten-free, Goat Cheese, Cranberry & Veggie Pizza

As much as I'm a cookie monster (see previous cookie recipes :)), I'm also an insatiable pizza lover. We have pizza in my house one to two times a week - at minimum, sometimes more. #dontjudge ;) This gluten-free, goat cheese, cranberry and veggie pizza is one of our favorites, because it's also on one of our favorite crusts - a fermented gluten-free crust from the family business of Alkeme Foods. Enjoy this delish pizza, the goat cheese on top with the unsweetened cranberries will delight you in a way that only good pizza can! Ingredients: 1 T of unsweetened dried cranberries 1/4 c organic red onion thinly sliced 1/4 c [...]

Perfect for Winter: Crockpot Chili

This is one of my all-time favorite winter recipes. Double this recipe to make big batch of this to enjoy all week long! Ingredients: 1 can of Eden Organic Kidney beans (Eden Organic pressure cooks their beans prior to canning which makes the beans much easier to digest and prevents leaky gut.) 1 can of Eden Organic Black beans 1 can of Eden Organic Pinto beans 1 organic small red onion, finely chopped 1 organic green bell pepper, finely chopped 1 organic red bell pepper, finely chopped 1 organic orange red pepper, finely chopped 3 c of organic spinach 1 head of organic broccoli, finely chopped 1 18 oz. can of [...]

Gluten-free, Meat-free Poutine

You can't live in Canada without becoming adept at poutine (pronounced poo-teen). At least that's what I told myself. ;) Unfortunately, most poutine has glutenous flour in the gravy as well as animal meat byproducts in the sauce and is topped with cheese curds. And I haven't had cheese curds since I grew up in Tillamook. So that wasn't going to work. I had to find a better way. One of my favorite things to do is to take a decadent and "unhealthy" meal and transform it into the healthiest dish possible. And that's what I did with poutine. Enjoy this gluten-free, no animal meat byproduct in the gravy, sheep-cheese poutine. [...]

Gluten-free, Dairy-free Fermented Bagel Sandwich

One of my biggest wins this winter has been discovering Alkeme breads. This family-run business not only has a great following-their-bliss story but they also make gluten-free breads and bagels that are the absolute best I've tried anywhere else (and I've tried them ALL). They use a fermentation process that ups the health factor of their breads and bagels. This bagel sandwich is me and my husband's new fave for breaking fast after 16-18 hours. Enjoy this easy and absolutely delicious meal! Ingredients: One "Everything" bagel from Alkeme Foods Hummus or vegan cream cheese Organic spinach leaves Organic micro-green sprouts or alfalfa sprouts Step one: Make the best hummus of your [...]

Gluten-free, Sugar-free Raspberry Bars

I've already confessed my cookie-monster-ness to you. So, we got that out of the way. :) But when I need to jazz it up a bit, I've got to bake something more than cookies. And that's when the inspiration struck for raspberry bars. And, where we are in Canada they have almost no organic frozen fruit (insert sadface, we are so spoiled in the USA). But we did score a huge box of local raspberries and I didn't want them to go bad. So I made raspberry cobbler using this delish recipe and then I had to do something else with them... Raspberry bars were then born! And boy oh boy, [...]

Grain-free, Sugar-free Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

My husband LOVES to buy bananas. Like lots of them. He's always convinced that he's going to drink a ton of smoothies that week and/or eat two bananas daily...why he thinks this, I'll never know. I'll literally say in the grocery store as he grabs two huge bunches, "Honey, please. Put the bananas down. Don't do this." To which he retorts, quite confidently, "I'm going to eat all of these. I promise." But what he really means is, "I know you hate to waste food and so do I, so I'm going to let these get super brown so that you have no other choice but to turn them into banana [...]
