I grew up with food insecurity. Some days we had no food. Some days people from church would leave bags of groceries for us. Some days the pizza from my mom’s pizza job was all we had to eat.
Because we were so poor, we had to eat whatever was available which meant super low-quality, commercialized, non-local foods.
That’s all that WIC and food stamps would cover. Besides, we could get more of the cheaper food to feed our family of five girls.
It was stressful and horrible for our long-term health.

🙏This is something that would have been invaluable to me as a child growing up in Tillamook County.
They also have a marketplace for local food growers, and they accept ebt for low-income families.
This is again something that would have given my family on food stamps healthy local food options instead of commercialized not-really-food, food.
Food Roots NW even helps local food producers start their businesses and thrive.
I cannot speak highly enough about Food Roots & about their twice-yearly Pie Night’s. These events are SO much fun. You’ll find every kind of pie imaginable that you can bid on (including GF!), and there’s LIVE music, you get to sample pies and you get to eat a yummy dinner.
